Mixed media 8x10 canvas in 11x14 custom shadow box
Inspired by overgrown abandoned spaces, rot and rebirth.
Death lurks in the shadows of this painting which features a lush bed of reindeer moss as a resting spot for a beautiful Death’s-head Hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos). Found in Africa and Great Britain. The skull-like marking on the thorax gives this moth its common name. While the genus name derives from Acheron, which (in greek mythology) is a river of pain in Hades or the underworld. Atropos takes its name from one of the three Moirai or Fates, goddess Atropos.
